Defensive Driving

Municipal Court

In North Dakota, if you receive a less than 5 point ticket, and you plead guilty, you may take a defensive driving course in lieu of 3 of those points.  You must notify the municipal court office that you would like to take advantage of this to receive the points in lieu.  There are a few stipulations:

  • You can't have taken another defensive driving course within the last 18 months.
  •         The original citation is 5 points or less.  You can find the North Dakota Department of Transportation list of assigned points here. If your offense is not listed, please contact the North Dakota Department of Transportation at 701-328-2600. The clerks do NOT know the assigned points!
  •          The defensive driving course must be completed within 30 days of the payment of the ticket. The defensive driving course is administered by the North Dakota Safety Council.  You can find the schedule, register and pay for the class in advance here.
This class can be taken at any time to earn a point reduction of 3 points as long as it has been more than 18 months since the last defensive driving course that was taken.

**This is only guaranteed if you are licensed out of the state of North Dakota.  If you are licensed out of a different state, you will need to contact your state's licensing agency to verify if this would be an option for you.**
