Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF)

Public Works

The City of Williston's rapid population growth prompted the City to address increased wastewater demands. Due to the immediate need, the City developed a complex phasing solution that involved interim improvements to sustain operation during construction of a new 4.5 million gallon per day Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF). The $105 million facility was financed by the North Dakota Public Finance Authority through their State Revolving Fund (SRF) program.

The WRRF, completed in 2017, serves up to 60,000 people and was designed with provisions to accommodate double this amount. This flexibility guarantees the facility will serve this community far into the future. Through a process that includes extended aeration and activated sludge to treat residential and industrial wastewater, the WRRF is the first municipal facility in North Dakota to achieve a "Class A" level of biosolids treatment, the highest possible achievement in wastewater treatment.
